Ovisuite 3.1 beta updated

Nokia has released an updated version of Ovisuite bringing some bugfixes and performance improvements.The update changes the version to 3.1.0.47 Beta.Here are the main changes

• Lots of error corrections in various areas
• Corrections to sync related to Microsoft Outlook
• Improvements into sync performance
• Many crash error corrections

Nokia IM 2.5 chat app now available to s60v5 devices

Nokia IM allows you to chat with all your friends in google,yahoo and more.The new version 2.5 has increased device support and also added new services.

So i downloaded and installed the app on my Nokia 5230 which reqires a restart to complete the installation.After the restart you were presented with an elegant looking app.First it just shown me a blank screen and when i pressed the ok(tick) it checked for updates and presented me with services that i can use to connect to friends(Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo!  Messenger, MySpace IM and Ovi Chat) with MySpace IM a new addition.
The application is nicely optimised for touchscreens and using it for chatting was fun.The changelog with this update are

• Chat home screen widget (only available for Nokia N97 and Nokia C6-00)
• added a new community, MyspaceIM!
• easily setup a new avatar for yourself; choose an existing image from the gallery or take a new picture!
•  timestamps added to the messages

What i found odd was that i had to sign out to exit the app.Also facebook chat is missed and hope it will come in later versions.Overall nicely designed and great app to try.

US The battle that Nokia must win

Nokia is the largest manufacturer of mobile and has been for a decade now.Even then the nokia's market share and it's revenue is dipping everywhere.I am not talking about steven ellop's entry and how it willl affect the company.Nokia once upon a time was the only thing that we heard of in the mobile sphere with the cool Nseries and the lot.
The nokia brand is no more considered hip and it has direct relationship with the us.Whatever the us makes we(the rest of the world) considers trendy.It can be argued that us is the source for all things best which is true for almost all the things.

• The online traffic highest from the us
• all the trends cloth,movies,music from the us

So it's the us that decides for the world whether anything is hip for the rest of the world.While apple knew that and used it's brand and aggressive advertising to winover american hearts.They succede and the smartphone's in the us has now become synonymous with iphone.Nokia went to conquer the world not knowing that you can conquer the world only after conquering us.
Now with stephen ellop as the new ceo,symbian^3 and nokia n8 their is an oppurtunity for nokia for getting their brand back and if they win the us recognition then developer support and the rest of the global image will come back.

Ovi maps the built in turn by turn navigation app for nokia has got a new update.The update brings a whole lot of changes.The main changes as given in nokia betalabs site are

• Pinch to zoom interaction (Only available on Symbian^3 devices no nokia 5230)
• Visually refreshed main menu and icons,
• New maps with public transport lines (as a new map layer) for subways, trams and trains in 80+ cities around the world. Just click the map toolbox icon and select Transit lines,
• Improved search experience - find places and addresses around you - or anywhere in the world - fast and easily. Browse places or enter a keyword in the search box. Now with suggestions and "did you mean?" functionality,
• New place pages with description, reviews, pictures and places nearby. Interact with places in a whole new way - you can check in, contact, navigate, save, rate, share, report or see place on the map,
• Share a place - send a place to your friends via SMS or Email. The SMS contains the address and a link to the place page with description, ratings, contact, URL and a mini map. The link opens up on the mobile browser (also on non-Nokia devices),
• Check in - keep your friends up-to-date with where you are and what you're up to. Check in to places and share it with your friends on Facebook and many more social networks. See places you’ve been to in your check in history,
• New Drive assistance mode with live traffic flow - after clicking Drive, you're instantly in drive assistance mode with live traffic flow and more. Once you start moving, get safety camera alerts and speed limit warnings,

Goto oviappwizard.com and click on get started button.The process is a four step one.

1. In the first step you will be asked to add your rss,twitter,facebook,youtube feeds.
2. Next step asks for an application icon and your site or blog logo.
3. There is an option to monitize your app with millenial media or mimpression
4. You will be asked publisher information and a brief description for your application.

Walla and you are all set and you can publish your app on ovistore.How easy can app creation get this easy.

How to:Listen to podcasts

Listening to your favorite podcasts has got a whole lot easier.Now you can listen to podcasts from the comfort of your home.Nokia podcasting application comes preinstalled on nokia 5800,nokia 5230,n97 and other symbian^1 devices.

The nokia podcasting application is present on music folder in the main menu.There is abuiltin directory where you can see featured nokia podcasts,video podcats. Also the directory has international podcasts and pocast dicovery.There is also a search option.But we cant add a new url.
Once you have added the podcats it willbe shown in the podcats folder and you can update the list of latest podcasts.You can download the podcats to your phone and even preview it when you download.

What ever topic you type for finding an answer Wikipedia will be there first with an indepth article.Wikipedia is a fine example of what collabration can bring through.So a wikipedia app is great to have so that you don't have to wait for the site to load and you can easily acess the topic you are looking for.

From the symbian foundation the one which spearheads the devolpment of symbian os has released a useful app that just makes using wikipedia easier.The app shows a stripped down version of wikipeidia so that it loads faster with options for searching and also shows related pages under each articles.The app also saves a history of your sarches and caches it so that you can easily read the page later.

Though Adobe has failed to bring out flash player 10.1 for symbian which brings desktop flash effects to your phone Microsoft has released its flash alternative silverlight to symbian phones.Silverlight is similar to flash and is a .net framework for the web.Silverlight supports videoplayers,animations etc which can spice up your internet experience on the mobile phone.
The silverlight supports only the s60 browser and opera mobile has no support for it.There are two working examples Bing application and HSN application.

I also got Seesmic Web working.Go to http://store.ovi.com/content/46120 to download Silverlight for symbian.All S60V5 devices are supported.

Any one who knows any webapps working please comment i would really like to know.

App Review:Nokia Video Cut-jump to favourite video scenes in a snap

Watching a movie or video in your nokia 5230 has become a lot easier.Nokia video cuts is a new prototype application from Nokia berta labs that allows you to jump from one scene in a video quickly.
The application on installation automatically list all your videos in your gallery,though i got some trouble in getting it to show my new videos as it doesn't have an update option.While playing a video or move  nokia video cut shows a list of key frames at the bottom of your screen.You can select a frame and the video jumps to that frame
instantaneously.How the application decides which all are the key frames is unknown but in my video it did a great job.

Compatibility:
Supported video formats include: H.263 (.3gp, .3gpp, mp4)
Tested on the following devices: Nokia N97 and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
Should also be compatible with other S60 v5 touchscreen devices, including Nokia N97 mini, Nokia X6 and Nokia 5230.

App Review:Divx player mobile 1.0 available for nokia symbian devices

Divx player is the offical player from Divx for nokia symbian devices.It has been updated to version 1.0 which adds support to nokia symbian touchscreecn devices including Nokia 5230,Nokia 5800,N97.
I had tried it on my Nokia 5230 but the results where very bad.Even a low bitrate avi(784) video couldn't be played at low bitrates while the realplayer could play mp4 files at a bitrate of 2000k.So i would strongly not recommend this app unless you want to watch a video without converting.
The application is poorly optimised for the touchscreen one example is that tapping on vidos listed will not play the video you have to click options and press play.If you want to try this software out just go to m.divx.com on your mobile

This will bring the feature till only available to high end devices to lower end devices like Nokia 5230 and i hope that it will turn the tide for Nokia.
Swype is an easier way to input text in an easy to use way by gliding through the letter rather than typing.Quoted by Newyork times as the next biggest invention after T9 and coincedentially Mr.Kushlur who devoloped T9 also devoloped Swype.I am very exited to try this out and i will update my expeience as soon as i can,meanwhile i invite any comments on anyone who has tried sywpe.Watch this video on Swype basics

How To:Video Calling on using Fring

Image via WikipediaMany of my friends ask me that why Nokia 5230 is called a 3G phone even when it doesn't have video calling.So i want to clear the myth that video calling means 3G.3G is a set of standards in which videocalling is a part.Nokia 5230 has 3G but doesn't have an option for video calling as it has no secondary front camera like Nokia 5800.So Nokia 5230 can fully utilise high data speed provided by 3G networks but will not be able to make video calls.

But now the nice people at Fringland has brought this feature to Nokia 5230.Just goto your ovi store app and you can find fring in the applications tab.

Note:You need an unlimited data plan for using fring to videocall otherwise datacharges may be high.

• New features
• Performance improvements
• application updates

So updating your phone is very important.Their are three ways for updating your phone firmware.

• Giving it to nokia service centre
• Update using Nokia software updater or Ovi suite
• Over the air update

Giving it to a nokia  service center is free only when you are under warranty period otherwise you will be charged.

I will recommend updating using ovi suite because it supports both application and firmware updates and also nokia software updater has an error which makes downloading of firmware infinite.

Over the air update means updating using your phone itself.

For that dial *#0000#  press options->check for updates.

If a newer firmware is available you will be asked whether to download.The main advantage is that the download is smaller.

I am starting this blog when nokia is loosing ground in smartphone markets all around the world.The market is slipping from nokia's hands and their profits equally affected.There was a time when nokia meant something.Anyone wondering what i am talking about or why just ignore this post.
Entered at this stage where nokia is focussing on low cost devices.Having same specs as n97 at a lower cost  is a smartphone worth trying.
